Course Description:
Students will be proficient in:
Ø Word Processing
Ø Spreadsheets
Ø Database
Ø Graphics
Ø PowerPoint
Ø Internet Searching
Students will have an understanding of how to apply these computer skills in school, home and the workplace.
Teaching Method: This course is primarily hands-on-computer format, presented in module form, supplemented with discussion and demonstration. If you have questions, ASK, others probably have the same question.
Course Expectations: Each student enters the class with varying levels of skills; our responsibility is to advance those skills to a higher level. Complete each assignment to the best of your ability and seek assistance and/or additional computer time as needed. After school computer access is EASILY available, just ask and make your own transportation arrangements.

Grading: You never fail, until you stop trying.
Ø A 10-point grading scale will be used. 10 A+, 9 A-, 8 B-, 7 C-, 6 D-…
Ø All work completed which demonstrates an understanding of class objectives will be given credit. Completed assignments, which are unsatisfactory, will be returned and one week is allowed for resubmission for credit.
Ø Grades are posted each week on Monday in the classroom, it is your responsibility to check the report weekly and report any errors or omissions to me immediately.
Ø ALL Assignments must be saved on your fileserver for the entire semester.
Ø Missing work, unless excused, will be a zero.
Statement on penalties for late work: Missed work will be accepted
in accordance with the school policy. (I.e. for an excused absence, you
have the same amount of time to make up the assignment equivalent
to the number of days of school missed; missed work for an unexcused absence may not earn credit.
Statement on the use of computer hardware and software: Computers shall be used during class time for class purposes only. Any personal use of the computer for recreation, outside classwork, or "any" use unauthorized by your teacher is unacceptable. See the “Acceptable Use Policy” (page 4) in your agenda. Under no circumstances are you to bypass the filter to access an unauthorized web page or site.
Statement on academic integrity: Class integrity is essential to a positive teaching and learning environment. All students are expected to complete coursework. Failure to do so by seeking unfair advantage over others or misrepresenting someone else's work as your own will result in disciplinary action for both parties involved.
Student Conduct: Teachers are responsible for maintaining order and a positive learning environment in the classroom. Students whose behavior is disruptive either to the instructor or to other students will be asked to correct their behavior. Failure to comply will result in corrective action. Overall, please demonstrate respect for other people and property and you will not have a problem.

Ø I will call your home (parent/guardian) if I do not get your cooperation. Make things easy on you and me by cooperating at all times.
Ø NO GUM, CANDY, FOOD or BEVERAGES are ALLOWED in the Lab.
Ø Always seat in your assigned seat.
Ø Class will adhere to all school policies and procedures as detailed in the student agenda. You are responsible for knowing and adhering to school policy, including Student Code of Conduct – Respectful, Responsible and Ready.
Ø Be on Time, if you arrive after the school bell rings, you are late.
INTRODUCTION TO
Business Computer
Students will gain an understanding of how computers work, learn terminology, create documents in word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation and assignments using Microsoft Office applications.
WORD PROCESSING - Ultra Key and MS Word – Weeks 1 through 8
Students will review the alphanumeric keyboard and learn to create, save, edit, format, spell check and print documents using Microsoft Office. Other topics include using toolbars, working with view, setting tabs and margins for document formatting.
SPREADSHEETS – MS Excel – Weeks 8 through 11
Students will learn how to create a basic worksheet using Excel. Topics include creating a spreadsheet, save and print; create formulas, copy, paste, data fill, autosum, custom lists, format cells, number formats, etc.
DATABASE – MS Excel Data Base / Apple Works – Weeks 11 through 14
Students will learn how to work with a database program. Topics include database design, data entry, creating reports and queries.
GRAPHICS AND DESKTOP PUBLISHING – Weeks 14 through 16
Students will create a variety of assignments integrating graphics within their applications. Topics include sizing, cropping, duplicating, moving, and coping graphics.
PRESENTATION – Weeks 16 through 20
Students will create a variety of slides in PowerPoint. Topics include: design, transitions, animations, view, action, notes and handouts.
BUSINESS APPLICATIONS – On going Weeks 1 through 20
Students will utilize the skills acquired in each of the above units to create a portfolio of documents for a business / project of their choice, which demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Kelly Middle School
8th Grade Business Computer Outcomes
(20 Weeks / 1 Semester)
The Students will:
ð Demonstrate novice proficiency with basic operations and terminology of the computer.
ð Utilize a keyboarding program (Ultra Key) to improve the touch-type method of keyboarding alphanumeric keys at an acceptable beginning typist level for speed and accuracy (20 – 28 wpm with 95% accuracy).
ð Demonstrate basic proofreading and editing skills.
ð Create simple graphics using a graphics program.
ð Demonstrate basic knowledge of spreadsheet data, formula entry, creating reports, databases and graphs (Excel and Apple Works).
ð Create a basic multi-media project using appropriate software (PowerPoint).
ð Demonstrate knowledge of basic Internet skills and create teacher-directed projects utilizing accessed information.
ð Identify career choices in the computer and data processing fields.
ð Identify the pros and cons of Internet usage and personal safety issues.
This class will satisfy the East Detroit High School Computer Credit requirement (1 Semester / .5 Credit) if the student maintains a C or better. This grade will also allow the student to register for high school advanced classes with teacher recommendation. A grade of C- or below while passing for Kelly Middle School will require the retaking of a Level 1 Computer Class at the high school.
My student and I have read and accepted the Computer Use Policy in the Student Handbook (page 4) adopted by the East Detroit School Board and will abide by it.
